Koufonisia
High quality beaches, excellent accommodation and a modicum of facilities equal unspoilt Greek Island life at its very best

Koufonisi

Situated to the southeast of its more illustrious neighbour Naxos, Koufonissi is two islands separated by a 200 metre straight. The upper, low, flat, populated island is one of the smallest islands in the Cyclades with an area of just 3.5 square kms. and a population of 284. In spite of its diminutive size, Koufonissia is becoming quite a trendy place to visit by virtue of its high quality beaches and cosy island atmosphere. With the largest fleet in Greece in direct proportion to the population, fishing is the main, year round occupation on the island. Testimony to its growing popularity, Koufonissi does have many restaurants, taverns and cafes together with some local art shops and a post office. We found the meals in the local hostelries to be of a high standard with fish in plentiful supply courtesy of the home fleet. The island is small enough to walk around in one morning.

Beaches are the big plus on Koufonissi. There are 4 really superb stretches of sand within a thirty minute walk of the village. You do not need an elaborate wardrobe. Bring your most casual clothes, they will suit the carefree mood of the place.Walk in the sun or the moonlight and smile at the contented faces that you will see along the way. A pleasant walk or bike ride along the coast will get you everywhere. Alternatively you can use the excursion boats or your own boat even. The inhabitants will be more than willing to help with anything you might require. Alone is only out of choice here, as everyone and everything come together to a form a harmonious whole .You will relax, lie on the soft sand, swim in the turquoise water, forget your obligations and love desire, forget the artificial simulation of life in the cities, surrender to the embrace of the sun, dream under countless stars and a friendly smiling moon …
